In November of 1990, Sensei Westfall relocated from the California Bay Area back to his hometown of Olympia, WA. Fulfilling a commitment to his instructors, he established Nikko Dojo, dedicated to passing on the teachings of Danzan Ryu as it was taught to him by Profs. Kufferath and Janovich.
The name Nikko Dojo is significant in that this was the name of Prof. Kufferath’s school in Hawaii, and it was at the professor’s request that Sensei Westfall use this name for his school.
Danzan Ryu Jujutsu was founded by Prof. Henry Seishiro Okazaki in Hawaii around 1922.
Prof. Sig Kufferath began his study of Jujutsu under Prof. Okazaki in 1937. He earned his black belt in 1941 and become an instructor in 1942.
Prof. Tony Janovich began his Jujutsu study under Prof. Kufferath at the age of 12. Previously he had studied under his father, who had taught hand to hand combat in the Marine Corps.
